According to CHP, around 3:45 AM on June 27, a Toyota Camry driven by a man in his 30s was speeding and driving recklessly near the I‑80/I‑580 split when it collided head‑on with a Hyundai driven by a 40‑year‑old man from Oakland.

The force of the crash launched the Hyundai off the overpass, sending it down onto Buchanan Street where it landed upside-down. The driver, later identified as Daniel Morales, died at the scene. The Camry driver was arrested and is facing multiple felony charges including DUI and vehicular manslaughter. A big rig was also involved in the multi-vehicle pileup.
